Freshman Jalen Blackwell wins local “Voice of Democracy” Contest

Freshman Jalen Blackwell won the “Voices of Democracy” contest sponsored by the Lt. Peter G. Zouck VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) Post 521.  The theme of the contest was entitled “Is America Today Our Forefathers Vision”, and Jalen was commended for his self-confidence and poise and was awarded first place. The essay was submitted in recorded form and Jalen read the essay during the November 14th Post meeting held at the Lt. Peter G Zouck VFW Post 521. VFW Post 521 is located in Owings Mills and was established in honor of a soldier from Glyndon who was killed during WW1 and buried in France. Jalen was awarded a $200 monetary prize from the VFW Post 521 and a $100 monetary prize from the Auxiliary Post 521, along with a Certificate of Achievement. 

The district event took place on Saturday, January 11th at the VFW 521 and all of the 1st place winners from the eight-districts competed. Families arrived for opening ceremonies and enjoyed a dinner provided by Texas Roadhouse and Mission BBQ. Jalen won at the district level and was once again awarded a $200 monetary prize from the VFW Post 521 and a $100 monetary prize from the Auxiliary Post 521, along with a Certificate of Achievement. 
 
The next step will be the state level competition through the Department of Maryland VFW.  Students have been invited to compete at the Wells McComas VFW in Edgemere, MD on January 26th at 1 p.m. 
 
Should Jalen win, he will earn an all-expense paid weekend trip to DC with a parent. The weekend will include tours to meet politicians and other dignitaries, and an opportunity to compete with 50 students across the country. The monetary award increases to $1000.00 at this level. 
 
Should Jalen win the national competition he would be awarded $35,000.
