Gerstell Academy proudly announces that fifth-grade student Devin Hardiman has been named the Elementary Visual Arts Winner in the Maryland Foreign Language Association (MFLA) Visual Arts Contest. Devin’s artwork, created last April in Ms. Patty Lutton’s fourth-grade Spanish class, beautifully illustrated the theme “Why is learning another language so important?” His vibrant design—featuring people united by international flags—earned first place in the statewide competition. Devin’s message: “Being able to speak different languages brings us together,” reflects the global perspective nurtured in Gerstell’s language programs. Congratulations, Devin!
Our second graders brought their earth science curriculum to life through an immersive visit to Crystal Grottoes Caverns, where they observed remarkable cave formations and gained a deeper appreciation for environmental stewardship. Their exploration continued at South Mountain Creamery, where they connected scientific concepts to agriculture by engaging with farm animals and learning about milk pasteurization. The day concluded with fresh ice cream and meaningful reflections on leadership and character.

Our 4th grade students set sail on the Lady Maryland for a hands-on Chesapeake Bay adventure, exploring science and environmental stewardship through activities like steering the ship, testing water salinity, and studying marine life. They witnessed the effects of pollution firsthand and discussed the unusual pistachio tide’s impact on ecosystems. A surprise encounter with the Pride of Baltimore II added excitement, as students exchanged cannon salutes and escorted the ship into the harbor. Inspired by innovations like Mr. Trash Wheel and reef balls, students are now designing their own inventions to help protect the Bay, which they’ll proudly present at October’s Leadership Circle.
