Upper School Mass Media Students Dive into Professional Broadcasting at the Community Media Center

At Gerstell Academy, education goes far beyond the classroom—and our Upper School Mass Media class recently had the opportunity to experience that firsthand. Students took an exciting trip to the Community Media Center of Carroll County (CMC), where they gained hands-on experience in the world of professional video production.

During the visit, students stepped into the fast-paced environment of a working broadcast studio. They rotated through a variety of important roles, including studio manager, camera operator, teleprompter operator, sound technician, graphics manager, video manager, and technical manager. Each role allowed students to understand the critical behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating a seamless broadcast.

By experiencing every step of the production process, students learned valuable lessons in teamwork, communication, and technology—all essential skills in today’s media landscape. The day’s activities gave students a new appreciation for the complexities of live production and the level of collaboration needed to succeed in a professional media environment.

This trip is part of Gerstell Academy’s blossoming partnership with the Carroll Media Center. Through this growing collaboration, Gerstell is actively incorporating media production opportunities into our Lower, Middle, and Upper School curricula. These real-world experiences allow students across all divisions to build practical skills that will serve them in future academic pursuits and careers.
