Middle School Students travel to Florida for Summer Science!

Fourteen middle school students traveled to the Florida Keys on June 12th for a 4-day trip to explore some of our nation’s most diverse marine ecosystems and to gain a new appreciation for science.

Several Gerstell faculty accompanied the students including group leader and science teacher, Glenn Segal, head of middle school Carey Wargo, and guidance counselor Dan Gourley along with parent Kathleen Noel. Students and adults alike enjoyed snorkeling while identifying various tropical fish, swimming with dolphins, and learning about their unique behavior. Students also learned about the anatomy of the dolphin from marine biologists and visited a sea turtle hospital where they learned about sea turtles, their environment and how to help preserve the sea turtle. The group also kayaked through mangrove -lined forests and experienced this unique coastal ecosystem.

A visit to the Everglades after dark provided the backdrop for a lesson about the thousands of birds, insects and reptiles who reside in this subtropical habitat. Students also spent the morning in the Everglades where they learned to properly use binoculars to identify alligators, snakes, and countless birds.

The group departed from Miami and returned to Baltimore after their amazing adventure.
