8th Grade Class Studies Lunar Cycles

Mr. Segal’s 8th grade class is busy learning about space science. Their culminating project for the 3-week unit on the phases of the moon involved a sweet surprise. Students modeled the phases of the moon as seen from Earth using Oreo® cookies.

This activity was designed to reinforce and assess student understanding of how the moon appears from the Earth as it completes its lunar cycle.
Students scraped or twisted the frosting to create a visual depiction of the waxing crescent, the waxing gibbous, and waning crescent to name a few of the phases of the moon.

Students also studied the tides, lunar eclipse, and related topics during the unit.
